What is a Parcel Sortation System?

Within the Warehousing, Fulfilment, Forwarding and 3PL sectors, there are many factors to consider when ensuring orders get to the right customer at the right place and at the right time!

One of the key links in this complex chain is Scan and Measurement data. A parcel can be easily tracked using barcodes and can be efficiently routed, stored and transported if weight and dimensions are known. Manually scanning, measuring, weighing and sorting packages is not a cost-effective or efficient way to fulfil an order and stay ahead of the competition.

Investing in an automated DWS (Dimensioning, Weighing and Scanning System) and Sortation system greatly speeds up processing times, reduces labour requirements and human errors, increases efficiency, reduces operational costs and provides accurate size and weight data for all shipments.

Introducing the BeeSort Parcel Sortation System

The BeeSort Parcel Sortation System is perfect for managing high volume orders accurately and at speed. Beesort is the ideal solution for a range of industries, including E-commerce, Fulfilment, Warehousing, 3PL, Retail and Freight Forwarding.

Sortation systems take out the complexity of managing high volume orders of varying sizes through automatically measuring, weighing, scanning and sorting parcels and packages at high speed.

How does a Parcel Sortation System work?

A sortation system automatically processes parcels and packages based on predefined criteria such as their size, weight, type, destination or specific delivery requirements.

These high-speed systems use conveyor belts to automatically transport a parcel to an inline weigh dimensioner (DWS), such as Resolution 5, where the barcode or RFID is scanned. The item is weighed and measured and an optional hi-res image captured that can used for OCR and label reading.

This scan and measurement data can be easily sent to a WMS or any third-party software using a powerful built-in API or can be stored in a cloud-based web interface. This WebUI stores the images and measurements data which can also be shared with a WMS.  Additional features of the WebUI include Data Analytics and Performance Metrics and even Cargo Optimisation to optimise the packaging of containers or trucks.

Once the item has been scanned, weighed and dimensioned it is passed along a conveyor belt system to be optionally re-labelled and then sorted or routed to bins via sortation chutes. There are many different types of sorting options including roller balls, diverter arms, direct drops and tilt sortation.

The sorting can be based upon destination, size, weight, courier and even packaging type which can be recognised using AI and provides the ability to determine if a parcel is in a bag or box etc.

The end result is fast and accurate capturing of barcode and measurement data and efficient,  reliable and labour free routing of all parcels passing through the sortation system.

Using the optional cargo optimisation also provides the best way to fill containers, pallet or trucks and provides additional benefits such as safely loaded transportation, fuel savings and a reduction in carbon footprints, providing a more sustainable operation and a reduced impact on the environment.

A simple parcel sortation system can sort up 2000 items per hour but this can be expanded to up to 14,000 parcels per hour. The solution requires minimal human resource, providing an excellent alternative to manual processing.

The Benefits of a Parcel Sortation System

Increased Efficiency

In the lead up to peak times such as Black Friday or Christmas, manual sorting is time-consuming and prone to errors and agency staff to meet demand require sourcing and training.

Automated systems remove the need for peak staffing and significantly reduce the time it takes to process parcels. Automation greatly improves throughput and allows for the handling of larger peak volumes seamlessly and without compromising the accuracy of measurements or sorting.

Accuracy & Reliability

Errors in manual sorting can lead to lost packages, customer dissatisfaction, and additional costs for reshipping or compensation. With a sortation system, these risks are minimised.

The system ensures that parcels are sorted correctly based on their destination or urgency, reducing the chance of human error and maximising efficiency.

Cost Savings

Investing in a sortation system has a fast ROI with huge savings on labour costs and removing the need for manual handling.

Automated systems can operate around the clock, helping to meet the demands of modern supply chains without needing to hire additional staff during busy periods.

Scalability

As business grows, so do logistical challenges. An automated parcel sortation system is scalable, meaning it can adapt to increasing volumes and changing operational needs.

A sortation system from Resolution is built for expansion. The sortation system's design is completely modular, meaning that you can start off with as many or as few chutes as required, more can then be added over time as required.

A dimensioning and sortation solution that can grow and evolve with your business.

Faster Delivery Times

Speed is a key factor in today's logistics world. Customers expect quick and accurate deliveries, especially with the rise of same-day or next-day delivery services.

Parcel sortation systems allow businesses to meet these expectations by accelerating the sorting process, ensuring packages get on the right delivery vehicle at the right time.

Is a Sortation System right for you?

If your business handles a significant number of packages daily, deals with varying parcel sizes and destinations, or is looking to improve operational efficiency, then a high-speed sortation system could be the perfect solution.
